Growing Thai Basil From Seeds
Thai basil has a strong spicy flavor with a hint of licorice. Thai basil is a highly sought after and popular addition to cuisines of Southeast Asia. Freshly picked Thai basil leaves can be added to salads, soups sandwiches or dried for winter use. The plant is somewhat smaller than most sweet basil varieties, with thiner leaves. Thai basil stems and flowers are purple, making the plants a beautiful additional to ornamental as well as culinary gardens.
Growing Your Thai Basil From Seed In 5 Steps
1. Prep your planting space. Thai basil prefers full sun, and plenty of water along with fertile, well-draining soil. Like other basils, Thai basil is a heat-loving and is especially susceptible to frost damage.
2. Thai basil seeds can be sown directly in a planting pot in the spring after all chance of frost has passed, or you can start your seeds indoors about 6 weeks before the average last frost.
3. Throughly wet planting soil, and place 3-4 seeds in each pot, at a depth of 1/10-1/4 inches. Keep soil moist, until seeds have sprouted. 4. Thai basil seeds usually sprout in 7-14 days. Once your Thai basil seedlings have their first true leaves, thin to one or two plants per pot. Protect your Thai basil plants from wind and sun for the first 7-10 days.
5. To get the highest yield of tender and flavorful leaves, pinch the tip of each branch, starting in early summer when the plants are 6" tall, to encourage bushiness.
