The Damiana plant (Turnera diffusa) is sometimes referred to as Mexican holly, is a shrub like bush that can grow up to six feet tall. Damiana plants grow serrated green foliage and produce small yellow flowers that turn into a delicious-smelling fruit. Damiana is a member of the Turneraceae family and has earned a reputation as an aphrodisiac. The leaves of the damiana plant have been used for medicinal purposes for ages. Damiana is native to Central America but can thrive in U.S.D.A. plant hardiness zones 9 through 11.

Growing Your Damiana Plant From Seed In 3 Simple Steps

# 1 Sowing your damiana seeds should be done exclusively in climate controlled spaces, as the seeds of damiana need higher temperatures and plenty of humidity to germinate. For cultivation, a potting-soil with mineral parts is needed. The seeds of the damiana plant should be planted about 2 cm (0.8 in) deep into moist soil. Cover the surface of your damiana potting medium with a plastic wrap or plastic lid. The pot should then be placed in a warm place. The germination period can be from 7-28 days. During this time the soil and air must be kept at the same moisture levels.

# 2 Once your damiana seeds have sprouted (in 7-28 days) you'll want to protect your damiana plant seedlings until they about 2 inches tall. When watering you want to make the soil moist but not soggy. Allow the top of the soil to slightly dry out before watering your damiana plants again. Making sure your damiana plant seedlings are in a warm, brightly lit location but protect them from any direct hot sun during the tender seedling stage.

#3 Feel free to begin harvesting your damiana leaves once the plant has reached 8-10 inches tall.
